Are those sites/blogs/ebay “unlocked” phones for real??
Do some people really get them to work on wifi and use the safari browser and iTunes, without signing up for at&t service?
Is it hard to do?

I’m NOT talking about another phone carrier – just saying “Is it simple to get your iPhone to do just wifi?”. I believe it still needs to be unlockd for this capability, or else it will just be an “expensive paperweight”.
I just want to buy the iPhone, use the wifi in my house for a few months and then “officially activate” it with at&t service.
Can I do this?

The method isn’t what most would call simple, but it is straight forward enough if you follow the steps.
I have included two links below that clarify how to get this done. The first link gives you the software you need in order to make it work. The second link clarifies the steps you need to take in order to take advantage of the hack.
A recap of the steps you need is below (this is for an XP or Vista based computer, not OS X) and I’ve added some commentary to clear up a few things that may not have been.
Instructions step by step:
1). Download UltraEdit-32, install it. (the third link is where to get it, this is a trial, but it should server your needs)
2). Download PhoneActivationServerV1.0, extract it to desktop or anywhere you want. (you can get this from the first web page linked below)
3). You might wanna backup the original iTunes.exe(located under C:Program FilesiTunes) first. (just copy the file to your desktop temporarily)
4). Run UltraEdit-32, open file iTunes.exe (the one in C:Program FilesiTunes, not the backup on your desktop) use Ctrl+G to go to address 2048912, then enter 33C0C3. Do the same for the rest two offsets: Go to address 257074 then enter 28 and go to 257013 then enter 33C9B1. Save the file and close UltraEdit-32.
5). Open Windows explorer and go to c:windowssystem32driversetc. Open the “hosts” file in ULTRAEDIT and add the line
127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com
to it. This will redirect any DNS query of “albert.apple.com” to your local host. Save & exit.
6). All you need to do is to run Phone Activation Server V1.0 first, leave it running and then run iTunes. Now when you plug in your iphone it will activate automatically in about 60 seconds.
