Many cell phones won't work with any carrier they will usually only work with the one that came with the phone. The company probably either sold you the cell phone for less than the service provider paid for it or gave you the cell phone. You now have a great deal on a new cell phone and the service provider feels you owe them some loyalty in return. Therefore they gave you a phone that will only work with a SIM card that ties you to that service provider. In other words, the cell phone is locked to that service provider.

It would be great if you could buy whatever cell phone you wanted and whatever cell phone plan you wanted. Unfortunately, that's not the way it is. That is unless you have an unlocked cell phone. In addition, there are some very good reasons why you need an unlocked GSM cell phone.

In locations such as the US where cell phone carriers either offer deeply discounted or free cell phones that have cell plans, these cell phones are usually locked in order to prevent them from working with other carriers. The carriers claim that this is required in order to subsidize the expense the cell phones. After some period of time, a carrier may agree to unlock the cell phone if requested to do so and may charge a fee. However, as a result of proprietary settings that are sometimes installed on the locked cell phones, they don't always function properly with other cell phone carriers after they are unlocked.

An unlocked cell phone is becoming highly desirable since it allows the use of various cell phone network providers. An unlocked phone can take advantage of any cell phone carrier services. SIM cards are used exclusively by almost all of the cell phones that are available all around the world. All cell phones use a SIM card to only allow you to use a specific network. This is usually a problem for many people especially if they don't like the particular network that is providing the service for their cell phone.

You must first understand what a locked cell phone is in order to understand what an unlocked cell phone is. A locked cell phone can only be used with a singular cell service provider. However, an unlocked cell phone may be used with many different cell service providers.

There are 2 cellular phone technologies that are currently being used by most of the world's mobile phone service providers. They are the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM). If you have the former your phone is not un lockable, period. But, if your phone operates on the latter, it may be un lockable.

If you purchase an iPhone 3G at the Apple Online Store you can activate it with any wireless carrier. All you have to do is insert the SIM from the service provider of your choice into the iPhone 3G and activate it by connecting to iTunes 8. That statement makes most people who hate cellular phone contracts especially those that are locked to a particularly service provider very happy. Most people would much rather pay the full retail price for a cellular phone then get locked into a contract. If an iPhone 3Gs that were unlocked had been available when they purchased theirs they would have never committed to a long term contract in the first place just to get a better price.

Many cellular phones have a microchip or SIM card which stores subscriber data. This SIM card is issued by the service provider and provides cellular service by activating any phone that it is inserted into. However, a cellular phone that is locked will only recognize a SIM card that is from a particular service provider. An unlocked cellular phone recognizes a SIM card from any other service provider. The software that keeps a cellular phone locked keeps the cellular phone tied to one service provider.

Although the law requires that many countries sell unlocked iPhones, many people in the US almost never have the opportunity to purchase an unlocked cellular phone from a service provider, which is exactly how the service providers want it.

You might have seen some pretty amazing online deals on unlocked phones, where you can purchase them for a fraction of what they normally cost, but is purchasing an unlocked cell phone a good idea?

If you want to buy unlocked iphone, unless you are purchasing one that has been factory unlocked, you need to be aware of the risks involved: many web sites and online auctions sell iphones that claim to be unlocked, or what is also known "jail-broken," but this isn't always the case. You run a good chance to purchase a device that looks just like the iphone, but is a cheap imitation; then you might find a genuine unlocked iphone, which is sold by dishonest seller and overpay or simply not get the item delivered.
